ACPPA to Conduct Workshop at International Pipelines Conference

June 2008

Pipeline Reston, Va. — The American Concrete Pressure Pipe Association (ACPPA) will conduct an educational workshop on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the ASCE International Pipelines Conference in Atlanta, GA. The ½-day workshop titled, Maximizing the Performance of Concrete Pressure Pipeline Assets, will be held at the Omni Hotel, CNN Center from 1PM to 5PM.

"We are excited about the workshop," noted ACPPA president & CEO Rick Lawhun, P.E. "It is the first step in implementing a Board of Direction initiative to increase interaction with engineers, owners and contractors. The fast-paced program will allow attendees to exchange ideas and information with experts in design, manufacture, operations and maintenance. It promises to be a real learning opportunity for everyone."

In keeping with the conference theme of pipeline asset management, the workshop will address the full range of life-cycle considerations, including available products, condition assessment technologies, evaluation procedures, cathodic protection techniques and rehabilitation/repair methods. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the versatility and durability of concrete pressure pipe—while learning how the pipe can be designed and manufactured to satisfy a variety of structural and environmental conditions, thereby lowering operations and maintenance costs. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Mehdi S. Zarghamee, principal & head of engineering mechanics and infrastructure for Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger in Waltham, MA; Wayne Brunzell of Brunzell Associates in Skokie, IL; and Jose Villalobos, founding principal & CEO of V&A Engineering in Oakland, CA. Additional presenters include David Marshall of the Tarrant Municipal Water District, Chris Wingert of the Colorado River Municipal Water District and a representative of the Greater Cincinnati Water Works.

The workshop carries a separate registration fee of $100, which includes handouts and an afternoon refreshment break. Register for the workshop by following the link to the ASCE conference website. For additional information, contact ACPPA at info@acppa.org or 703.391.9135.
